Treatment

TMJ dysfunction can lead to irreversible damage. Clicking, popping or grinding in the TMJ are the most common signs of a joint problem, yet by the time the person notices it, there is already damage to the disc. It is extremely important to correct the problem as soon as possible before the damage has occurred or before it gets worse.

When the bite is corrected the structures of the TMJ will move to their proper place, reduce stress, eliminate spasm, and reduce or eliminate popping, clicking, or grinding. Once the bite is corrected, the muscles holding the disc can relax, alleviating the jaw, face, head, neck, back, and shoulder pain that resulted.

Treatment for a TMJ problem begins with a thorough diagnosis that involves observing, measuring, and recording jaw movements and bite patterns. When the diagnosis is confirmed, depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment can be as simple as a bite adjustment or an appliance that creates the healthiest bite for that person.

Please note: The vast majority of people do NOT need orthodontics for their problem.

A bite adjustment involves lightly removing the improper bite contacts and leaving the ones that are on the proper places on the teeth. The simplicity or complexity of this adjustment depends on the biting contacts, joint symptoms, and the amount of wear on the teeth.

Reshaping of destructive contacts

There are many different TMJ appliances available if necessary and it is important that the right one is chosen for each person. The purpose of any appliance is to change the bite in a positive way that will take the stress off the TMJ, allow the muscles to relax, and the joint to heal.

Success in treating TMJ and bite problems comes from training and experience. Recognizing the individual aspects of each person’s problem and performing the proper treatment is the difference between success and failure. Dr. Richard Miller has had over 30 years experience successfully treating occlusal disease, TMJ problems, headaches, and migraines.
